How to Use BBCodes for Quotes, Youtube and Other Formatting

#1 Post by apollos0fAlexandria » 6 years ago

The most common questions we receive from newer users are how to use quotes, and how to embed YouTube videos. I'll address those here.

This guide may get added to over time as a kind of FAQ about how to make posts and format them correctly. So feel free to post questions on this thread and if possible we'll provide answers as a comment, or if it's a common issue we'll add it to this OP.

If you want to try any of these things out, you can do so by creating a new post and previewing it without posting it. (Try not to hit the post by mistake though if you're just playing around. Mods don't need the extra work. :D )

Quoting

The basic tags for quotes are as follows (I'm putting them in a code box so that they don't format into a quote)

Code: Select all

[quote]Quoted text here[/quote]
You can also include the username of the person you are quoting (this is generally a good idea):

Code: Select all

[quote="joeBloggs"]Quoted text here[/quote]
Note that the quotation marks around the username are not optional. They must be included in the tag.

As well as copying and pasting content and adding quote tags manually, you can also use the quote button to start a new post based on quoting an existing one.

This will quote the entire post, so please edit it down to just what you need according to the guidelines below.

The real skill is in knowing when to quote and when not to quote. There is generally no need to requote long portions of content. Once you know how quotes work you can take the time to edit opening and closing quote tags to highlight just the portion you need.

If you're just agreeing with a post then it's sufficient to just say "Hi Joe, I agree with your last post" or something like that. No quoting is required because people can see what Joe's last post was just by scrolling up a bit. This saves cluttering up the site with duplicate content that makes it harder to read.

Embedding YouTube Videos

It is possible of course just to post a link to a YouTube video, but if you want to embed a video then here is how to do it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: YouTube content posted here is subject to the same policies that apply across the site. Please be very cautious about what you post here, and never post a video that you have not viewed in its entirety yourself. Treat YouTube and any external content as if you had typed it out yourself in this regard. Posting content that disregards site policy can result in warnings or a ban even if it's not your original content.

The basic tag for embedding YouTube is like this:

Code: Select all

[youtube]nnnnnnnn[/youtube]
But what goes in that middle bit - nnnnnnn - you might ask. This is the ID of the specific YouTube video you want to embed.

Here is an easy way to find it. On YouTube itself when viewing the video you want to embed, click on "share" underneath the video. Then you will see the ID as a code following the last / in the URL that appears. (See image below). You can also see this code in the URL of the video in your browser, but sometimes it's got other parameters after it and can be harder to pick out.

That's all for now. Feel free to raise questions here, and we'll respond as time permits.

Apollos I am just making sure youtube works :)

Although Jehovah may have regretted creating humans, I think he is very proud of his feline creation.
This young lady puts into words God's sentiments towards cats!

Hi Bruno,

Even though you didn't quite figure out the embed feature, you're totally excused due to the entertainment value of the awesome cat lady.

I only worry about whether anybody will be able to enter her house without a full hazmat suit in around 30 years or so. :ugeek:

Hello everyone, this is the site that I use to post images:

https://imgbb.com/

I don't know how to do it on a computer, but on mobile you can follow these steps:

1° Download a selected image from Google.

2° Enter in the site and click in "Start Uploading" it will ask you find where is the image on your device.

3° Select it and click in "Send", wait it load after that.

4° After it load click on the bar above the link, scroll down and select the option "BBCode full linked" now copy and paste the code that appeared in the Topic or Reply that you are writing, it's done!

I hope it helps!
My english isn't very good, sorry any inconvenience.
