This guide may get added to over time as a kind of FAQ about how to make posts and format them correctly. So feel free to post questions on this thread and if possible we'll provide answers as a comment, or if it's a common issue we'll add it to this OP.
If you want to try any of these things out, you can do so by creating a new post and previewing it without posting it. (Try not to hit the post by mistake though if you're just playing around. Mods don't need the extra work.

Quoting
The basic tags for quotes are as follows (I'm putting them in a code box so that they don't format into a quote)
Code: Select all
[quote]Quoted text here[/quote]
Code: Select all
[quote="joeBloggs"]Quoted text here[/quote]
As well as copying and pasting content and adding quote tags manually, you can also use the quote button to start a new post based on quoting an existing one.
This will quote the entire post, so please edit it down to just what you need according to the guidelines below.
The real skill is in knowing when to quote and when not to quote. There is generally no need to requote long portions of content. Once you know how quotes work you can take the time to edit opening and closing quote tags to highlight just the portion you need.
If you're just agreeing with a post then it's sufficient to just say "Hi Joe, I agree with your last post" or something like that. No quoting is required because people can see what Joe's last post was just by scrolling up a bit. This saves cluttering up the site with duplicate content that makes it harder to read.
Embedding YouTube Videos
It is possible of course just to post a link to a YouTube video, but if you want to embed a video then here is how to do it.
IMPORTANT NOTE: YouTube content posted here is subject to the same policies that apply across the site. Please be very cautious about what you post here, and never post a video that you have not viewed in its entirety yourself. Treat YouTube and any external content as if you had typed it out yourself in this regard. Posting content that disregards site policy can result in warnings or a ban even if it's not your original content.
The basic tag for embedding YouTube is like this:
Code: Select all
[youtube]nnnnnnnn[/youtube]
Here is an easy way to find it. On YouTube itself when viewing the video you want to embed, click on "share" underneath the video. Then you will see the ID as a code following the last / in the URL that appears. (See image below). You can also see this code in the URL of the video in your browser, but sometimes it's got other parameters after it and can be harder to pick out.
That's all for now. Feel free to raise questions here, and we'll respond as time permits.
