Face Masks

#1 Post by Marina » 7 months ago

I spoke to a midwife today who was very informative on the subject of face masks. So I thought I'd share.

The face mask is pretty useless. They were used in surgery not to prevent the surgeon getting an infection but to prevent anything from the surgeons mouth or nose going into the open wound of the patient.

However, they have to be worn in some places. So if you want any kind of protection, put your face mask on and DO NOT TOUCH IT. If you touch anything with corona virus on it and then touch your face mask you could breath it in. Once you have touched your face mask it is potentially contaminated and you should change it.

Skin is a natural barrier. You will not catch corona virus by touching your hand on something with the virus on it then touching your face. You have to touch your eyes, mouth or nose to get the virus inside you. Even your ears are pretty safe from carrying the infection into you.

In addition to this the midwife told me about hand washing. She explained that you hear much about washing your hands but no one is talking about the need to DRY THEM. Warm wet hands are ideal for the virus. Therefore, make sure you dry you hands.

I have also been told that if you want to reuse your paper mask, you can put it in a paper bag and reuse it after 3 days.

You should not wear a wet mask.

Hi Marina,

I had a similar discussion with my own Doctor about 2 months ago. This Dr. gave the same advice that your midwife told you. Another way to prepare a mask for reuse, is to hang it in the sun for several hours, as long as possible. The suns rays will kill any germs, bacteria, etc, making the mask safe for reuse.
And yes, it's important for the mask to remain dry.

Regards, Amos.

Hi Amos :)

We supposedly have a heat wave coming in a few days so I might try hanging them in the sun.
I've been super casual with my masks and others are too. Just keep it in back pocket or shoved in bag between shops.

Also, I have been reading this though. If everyone wears a mask, can be a road to 1984-style conformity or should I say 1914-style?

The result, to use Orwell’s words, is “a nation of warriors and fanatics, marching forward in perfect unity, all thinking the same thoughts and shouting the same slogans” – millions of people, he adds, “all with the same face”.

How about this for a face mask?

Can't wait to get it? Why not get one of these as well?

I've hunted can't find a mask with PIMO on it but found this. Could be fun to wear at a Zoom meeting.

Hi Bobcat,

That's a nice mask. I can afford the mask, as long as I don't have to buy the Bobcat to go with it first!

Regards, Amos.

My understanding has always been that you wear the mask to protect others, not yourself. If you have the virus and cough or sneeze with a suitable mask on, it helps contain the droplets with the virus. Of course, for everyone to get the benefit we would all need to be wearing masks.

Also I found when I started wearing one that it was a reminder for me not to do what most of us do on a regular basis- touch my face, mouth, eyes, nose....!

There are many views on the use and benefits of masks. However, even if it protects a bit (not proven), when you remove the mask with your hands, you should immediately wash you hands and dry your hands. Also, the longer you wear a mask, to more it will be contaminated. Surgeons wear mask to avoid fluids falling in the open wound, not to protect from a virus or so.

In this video Ali shares a recording from Dr Harkinson. He is a medical specialist in pathology and virology, trained at Cambridge University, UK. He is the ex-President of the Pathology Section of the Medical Association. Previous to this he was Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine doing a lot of teaching. He is Chairman of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (in Ottowa, I think he says) and he is currently the Chairman of a biotechnology company in North Carolina selling a COVID 19 test.

He says all this COVID stuff is a hoax. It is politics playing medicine and we should go back to normal tomorrow.

His brief lecture explaining this starts at 5:29
