In what color did Jehovah God depict himself in Rev 4:3?:

#1 Post by Kosonen » 2 months ago

Today I learnt something new about Revelation 4:3.
It describes how Jehovah God looked like in the vision He gave about Himself to apostle John:

"And the One seated had the appearance of a jasper stone and a sardius stone,..."

I checked what colours are jasper and sardius stones. I was very surprised that they are red, similar to red lava. Can you imagine Jehovah God showing himself like that to apostle John?

I then checked the Revelation Climax book of the WT society, but they have a picture to this vision, but there Jehovah God is depicted as bright yellow.

Hi Kosonen

This is just off the top of my head, but do you think that the intention here might be to express the precious nature of who God is to us, rather than a particular colour?

Hi Kosonen, your description made me remind of Hebrews 12:29.

I think that John must be trying to describe something like this:

A polished stone of different colours is also a possibility

Greek - IASPIS - a precious stone of various colours

Hebrew - YASHePHEH - from an unused root meaning to polish
Pliny speaks of a white 'jasper' called 'Astrios', and which, he says, is crystallo propinquans, 'near to crystal', found in India, and on the shores of Pallene." (John Gill—Comments on Rev 21:11)

I think that John must be trying to describe something like this:

"In the colors of a thousand sunsets He traveled to the World on a Silvery Night"
