Chiastic Structure in Zephaniah

#1 Post by Bobcat » 1 year ago

The following chiasm/symmetry of the book of Zephaniah is from the book, The Literary Structure of the OT (David A. Dorsey, pp. 310-14). It breaks the entire book down into seven symmetrical messages.

A. Coming judgment upon the wicked of Jerusalem (Zeph 1:2-6)

. . . B. Coming judgment of corrupt leaders (sarim) and rich of Jerusalem (Zeph 1:7-13)

. . . . . . C. Yahweh's judgment of all nations: Great and terrible day of Yahweh (Zeph 1:14-18)

. . . . . . . . . D. Call to repentance (Zeph 2:1-3) CENTER or PIVOT

. . . . . . C^ Yahweh's judgment of all nations: Oracles against the nations (Zeph 2:4-15)

. . . B^ Coming judgment of corrupt political (including sarim) and religious leaders of Jerusalem (Zeph 3:1-7)

A^ Coming restoration of Jerusalem and its fortunes (Zeph 3:8-20)

There is a more detailed chiasm of the whole book which I will include later. It has the same basic structure as above but more of the details that show the reasons for the symmetrical structure. There are also literary structures that make up the individual messages. I will also include them as time allows.
