Chiastic Structure in the Bible

#1 Post by Bobcat » 2 years ago

For those unfamiliar with the term "chiasmus", "chiastic", and "chiasm", this post is intended to give an introductory education on these terms and their place in the Bible. These terms are drawn from the Greek letter chi ("x"). Those terms refer to a type of literary structure that can be found many times in the Bible. "Symmetry" is another term used for this type of literary structuring.

At any rate, you will find here numerous links to this topic and to this type of structuring as it is used in various books of the Bible. Below is the Main Index to individual books of the Bible. Each link will take you to a smaller grouping of Bible books from which you can jump to an individual Bible book. (This format was necessary because each post is limited to ten hyperlinks.)

Note that only books that are in bold have an established thread. Over time I hope to increase the number of Bible books that have their own thread.

So, without further ado . . .

I think this is an excellent study topic. A majority of the Bible is written in some form or partial form of chiasm and some are quite complex.

One that blew my mind was Matthew. I’ve read a paper that discussed in detail the complicated chiastic structure of the book, but the beginning and ending theme found below is quite amazing, to me personally.

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

For anyone interested, here is a book related to the topic of chiasmus in the Old Testament.

Another book on Chiasmus in the Bible: Here.

And a book on chiasmus in the NT: Here.

I'll be able to give a book review on the book in the first link in a few weeks if anyone is interested.
